Highest-risk industries by average breach cost, reported by IBM:
- Healthcare: Healthcare breaches averaged $7.42 million in 2025 and took 279 days on average to identify and contain, nearly six weeks longer than the global average of 241 days.
- Financial services: Breaches in financial services averaged $5.56 million in 2025, driven in part by regulatory fines and the resale value of financial account data.
If an organization stores protected health information (PHI) or financial account data, then that organization becomes a higher-value target for ransomware groups seeking data that can be resold or used for fraud.
The global average breach cost across all industries was $4.44 million in 2025, meaning a healthcare breach cost roughly 67 percent more than the typical organization that year.
